How to add bio information to the site
« on: May 26, 2007, 06:46:07 AM »
Jay: I have noticed that several members have posted personal profiles in the form of a narrative. I have a limited amount of time to hunt for stuff on the exrep site, so am I frigging stupid because I can't seem to find a place in exrep where I can plug in my personal profile??.Not that I have anything great to say... Thanks, Tom Gilliam/Repguy

Tom,

Am putting this into our discussions area because I think others may have the same question.

In the bad olden times you were pretty much limited to sending me a note by email, and waiting for me to have the time to get around to making an update on the ExReps site.  ExReps became an interactive site starting in March of this year which actually gives you several options.

Best way
1. Get an account in the ExReps forums area by clicking on the register button , you will also have to reply to the verification email that gets sent to the email address you use during the registration process.
2. Go to our introduction thread , click on "reply" and put whatever information you choose to into your reply.
3. You can also click on the profile button  and add a photo, personal web site URL and some other information.

I plan on modifying the software we are using (Simple Machines Forum) to include a Bio Box in the profiles area, however this also requires rebuilding the menuing system, so I am not sure when I will find time to get around to it.

Another Way
You can send me a bio consisting of a paragraph or two, by email, I will put it in the notes section of the web site where I put in information and messages when people sign up.  I will add it when I have the time, which could be over a month. Also I plan on doing something with the notes section at some point so cannot say that these notes will be around forever.

Last Way
I recently added an un-moderated mailing list  to the system, and put a post about it in the forums

You can sign up for the pipeline mailing list and send your bio info to the list, whenever I figure out what to do with the bio material from the notes area I will probably be able to figure out a way to incorporate the same information into the same solution.

Tom, the real world is that we have a pretty wide range of levels of computer expertise for members of the ExReps community, all the way from Web TV users to IT system administrators.  So I don't think there is any RIGHT way to accomplish any particular function. We are trying to accommodate the system to the community rather than making the community members use ExReps in any particular way.

Hope this helps. Any ideas or suggestions that you want to make will be appreciated.
