Smokey Harrison, a man I haven't seen for over 30 years but someone I liked very much. When I got to the Seychelles in 1967, he worked for Pan Am, support contractor for at the Indian Ocean Tracking Station (AFSCF OL-9). The last time we were there at the same time was 1972 - 1975.
When I met him, he was in charge of food preparation for about 130 men who worked there then. He used to have the chow hall prepare finger food for the parties we had on weekends. He was forever doing something to make life just a little better in that very remote place. Some how, once a month, Smokey managed to put on a steak bar-b-que for us. One time when I checked my fish traps, we brought back 2 huge eels weighing about 35 lbs each. He smoked one for me and the local East German spy who owned the cold storage facility pickled the other one. Needless to say, the smoked one was best.
